±×·¸´Ù°í ¿ì¸®´Â ¹éµÎ»êÀ» ´ÜÁö °Å´ëÇÑ ´ëÀÚ¿¬À¸·Î ¹Ù¶óº¸Áö ¾Ê´Â´Ù. ¹éµÎ»ê¿¡ ºÎ¿©µÈ ¹ÎÁ·Àû ±â¿ø°ú »ó¡Àº ³²°ú ºÏÀ» ¸··ÐÇÏ°í ¿©ÀüÈ÷ À¯È¿ÇÏ´Ù. ´Ù±¹Àû ±â¾÷ÀÇ À§¼º»çÁø ¼­ºñ½º¸¦ ÅëÇØ ¹éµÎ»êÀ» Á¢ÇÏ´Â ½Ã´ë·Î Á¢¾îµç Áö±Ý, ¿ì¸®´Â ¶Ç ¾î¶°ÇÑ ¹æ½ÄÀ¸·Î ¹éµÎ»êÀ» ¹Ù¶óº¼ ¼ö ÀÖÀ»±î. ÀÌÀü ¼¼´ë¿Í´Â ´Þ¸® Àå¼Ò¸¦ ÀÒÀº À̹ÌÁöÀû °æÇèÀº ¿ì¸®¿¡°Ô »õ·Î¿î Çؼ®ÀÇ °¡´É¼ºÀ» ¿­¾îÁÙ ¼ö ÀÖ´Ù. Áý´ÜÀÇ ½Å³ä ¼Ó ÇÊ¿ä¿¡ µû¶ó Àǹ̸¦ °­Á¦ÇÏ´ø ½ÅÈ­Àû Àå¼ÒµéÀÌ º¯È­µÈ ¹Ìµð¾î ¾È¿¡¼­ »õ·Î¿î º¸±ÝÀÚ¸®¸¦ ¸¶·ÃÇÏ´Â ¹æ½ÄÀº °ú¿¬ ¹«¾ùÀϱî.

 

In the past, Mount Paektu was an unknown land. Though the words ¡°Mount Paektu¡± can be clearly heard in the lyrics of the often-sung national anthem, it was from only a single measure of the song and the image of Heaven Lake shown on television while the anthem plays, despite being sharp and clear, felt far in the distance. However, with repetitive instillment and influence from the media, Mount Paektu came to have an irresistible symbolic meaning for us and the inability to set foot there in the real world served as a mythical element that reinforced its meaning.

As touring Mount Paektu became permitted with the passage of time, many people visited it, one after another. Of course, China considered it to be part of the Changbai Mountains, but for us, it was Mount Paektu. The goal of setting foot in such an unreachable, sacred realm and seeing its actual scenery for ourselves could now be accomplished more easily than expected. Accordingly, the meaning of Mount Paektu had less gravitas than before.

Nevertheless, we do not perceive Mount Paektu merely as just another part of Mother Nature. The ethnic origins and symbolism endowed upon Mount Paektu remain for both North Korea and South Korea. The pilgrimage of Choi Namseon, who sought the origin of a modern sovereign state in the territory to stand up against the Japanese colonial rule, added an ideological meaning pursued by each community in line with the requests by those rising to power after emancipation. In the present day, Mount Paektu is continuously being reimagined as an imaginary world that cannot be reached.

In today¡¯s world where one can view Mount Paektu through satellite images provided by a multinational company, what are some other ways of looking at Mount Paektu? Unlike past generations, experiencing a place through images rather than actually being there may open new possibilities of interpretation for us. How could mythical places, which used to compel meaning due to collective belief, take root in a changed media?
